James A. Thomas, 85, of Memphis, formerly of Gorin, died Monday morning, December 9, 2013, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis.
He was born the son of Glynn B. and Nelli Elgene (Morris) Thomas on May 18, 1928 at Gorin, MO.
He was one of seven children in the Thomas family. Jim lived his entire life around the Gorin area, before moving to the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis.
Jim was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Brooklyn Dodgers. He enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and attending hymn sings. Jim loved Spiderman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers – G.B., Morris, John, and Tobe; a sister, Lois; two nephews, Dave and Glynn Branch.
He is survived by his brother, Gary and wife Sharon Thomas of Libertyville, IL; sisters-in-law, Lela Thomas of Earlville, IA, and Barbara Thomas of New Orleans, LA; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, December 12 at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Pastor Homer Poor officiating. Burial will be in the Gorin Cemetery.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, December 11, at the Gerth Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Scotland County Care Center, the Gorin United Methodist Church, or the Scotland County Cancer Fund and may be left at or mailed to Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main, Memphis, MO 63555.

Sorry for your loss. I will remember the time he lived in Gorin and my mom and I took him cherry tomatoes. He loved.
I am so sorry for your loss. May “the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) comfort and soothe your heart. His promises, found in the Holy Scriptures, can offer much hope. It assures us at John 5:28,29 that our loved ones will be remembered and brought back to life in the resurrection.
